As of September 12, 2023, any woman over the age of 18 will be eligible to qualify and compete in the Miss Universe Pageant, for the first time since 1952.
The historic decision was announced during Tanny Fletcher’s Beauty Pageant show at New York Fashion Week on Tuesday. Contestants will now have no upper age limit, which was previously set at 28.
“The Miss Universe Organization announces the elimination of all age limits across all Miss Universe-associated pageants,” the pageant organisation said on their official Instagram page. Every adult woman in the world will be eligible to compete to win the title of Miss Universe in 2024, according to the statement.
R’Bonney Gabriel, Miss Universe 2022, said, “Age is not a barrier to women competing and succeeding.”
The Miss Universe team strives to live up to the platform they have created by being inclusive. In my opinion, what I like about Miss Universe most about them is the fact that they are always out first in line, seeking ways to be more inclusive and live up to the platform they have designed for us. “A woman’s ability to compete at Miss Universe, or anything else in life, shouldn’t be defined by her age. Age should just be a number,” Gabriel said at the event.
During the question-and-answer session held at the Miss Universe 2022 contest in New Orleans, Gabriel said that if given the chance, she would raise the age limit for contestants.
As part of the upcoming Miss Universe pageant, which will take place in El Salvador in November, there will also be contestants who are married or mothers. Last year, a historic change was announced, eliminating the selection process that favoured single women 18 to 28 who had never given birth.
