A response to Shekhar Gupta – Why it is not likely that the BJP would listen to Kamala Harris’s ‘sermon’

Modi-Biden meeting - BJP to Kamala Harris’s 'sermon

This article is a response to Shekhar Gupta’s article on The Print where he argues that US VP’s ‘sermon’ to N Modi about the most important of the 3 Ds, democracy has to be taken seriously and BJP govt needs to introspect how this situation was reached.

My view on this is, BJP knows exactly how they reached here and they are not at all bothered about this. They have a definite goal and they do not care if the process of reaching that goal looks ugly to some of the more ‘progressive’ individuals, be it an Indian journalist or the VP of the USA.

Let us understand how the BJP and our country reached this point to predict what is going to happen next.

The resurgence of Hindu identity

The political appeasement of radical muslims by Indian political parties and treating the muslim population as a fixed vote bank which is absolutely necessary to win any election, while at the same time targetting/ letting others target Hinduism made the ground ripe for the resurgence of suppressed Hindu identity. BJP worked very hard to cash in on this opportunity. This resurgence that we are witnessing today could have easily been predicted in the 80s but most commentators either did not realise or deliberately ignored the growing anger amongst the Hindus.

What is wrong with India

We do not need extensive surveys or deep analysis to understand what it is that the BJP thinks is wrong with India and what it is that they feel needs to be corrected. If you read former Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s poem,“ Hindu tan man”, you would get a good idea of what the BJP feels. Every line of the poem speaks a million words but the part that stands out for me and explains what is happening in India at the moment is

I am a brave son, in the world of my mother, Jauhar is immense.

Ask Akbar’s sons, do they remember Meena Bazar?

Do they remember the intense fire burning in Chittor fort?

When oh thousands of mothers became immortal by burning in the fire of jauhar .

It is not an extinguishable fire, I have absorbed it in my veins.

What is the vismay (surprise ) If this fire someday outbursts suddenly with an insurrection.

People who read and understood this poem would have realised the fire that was burning inside many hindus and BJP members. This fire that Vajpayee talked about has exploded and no one should have any vismay (surprise).

BJP members are angry that they were taught, invaders were “greats” when in reality they killed, abused, pillaged Hindus, hindu lands, hindu religion and temples. They are angry that certain parts were deliberately left out of our history textbooks and others(even untrue) were included. They want this to change, they want to correct the historical wrongs and they do not care if the process doesn’t seem secular enough to some commentators.

What can be the likely impact of US VP’s comment

The US VP is a very important person, every word she speaks has to be taken seriously. Will they be taken so seriously by the BJP though, that they will be willing to change their strategy ? I don’t think so.

Many people on the right have indicated that they believe this to be a “transition phase” which will end when Hindus will get their “rightful place” and until they reach there, the democracy watchdogs and others will be called names, trolled and ignored.
