Home Minister Amit Shah announces 5,000 Cyber Commandos for cybercrime protection initiative

While attending a program organized on I4C Foundation Day, Home Minister Amit Shah announced the launch of a cybercrime protection initiative. The minister said the government would deploy 5,000 cyber commandos over the next five years. The fully-trained officials will reply promptly in cases of cyber-attacks and threats. That way, he underlined cybersecurity is national security.

Shah made it amply clear that for India’s growth, strong cyber defences were needed. He inaugurated the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre, CFMC, a machinery that would contribute to fighting online financial crimes. Under this cybercrime protection initiative, Shah also launched a suspect registry. This registry will keep track of those suspects who are involved in cybercrime and financial fraud. It would be shared by the states, union territories, and central agencies and prepared based on data on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, NCRP.

Cybercrime protection initiative’s coordination with financial institutions to enhance fraud risk management

It will work with banks and financial institutions to develop fraud risk management in financial systems. Amit Shah emphasized the fact that cyber criminals don’t have any borders; hence, efforts are to be made jointly. In another example, he said that fragmented data at state levels won’t work. The common registry will ensure a coordinated approach to cybercrime.

Under the cybercrime protection initiative, Shah also launched the Samanvaya platform tool to assist in investigating crimes related to cybercrime. It will share data on cybercrime among law enforcement agencies. It will also aid in the mapping of crimes and in better coordination in fighting against cyber threats.

Shah again said that these efforts, as led by I4C, will enhance the country’s ability to fight cybercrime and protect both national and financial security. The newly formed Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre shall engage all stakeholders, including banks, telecom providers, and IT intermediaries, to build a model of Cooperative Federalism in cyber law enforcement.
