Karanataka Chief Minister SM Krishna passes away at 92, government declares three-day holiday

The Karnataka government has declared three-day mourning after the death of former Chief Minister SM Krishna. The veteran leader, who was 92 years old, passed away early Tuesday morning at his residence in Bengaluru after a prolonged illness. His last rites will be performed with full state honors, and all official celebrations or functions have been suspended during this period.

Chief Minister SM Krishna, a giant in Indian politics, served Karnataka as its 16th chief minister between 1999 to 2004. He was instrumental in transforming Bengaluru into the country’s IT hub, winning the title “Silicon Valley of India.”

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, Krishna’s political career started in 1962 when he won the Maddur Assembly seat as an Independent candidate. He was the governor of Maharashtra and India’s External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012 during the UPA government over his illustrious career.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to express his condolences, calling Krishna a leader who worked hard for the welfare of people from all walks of life. “Shri SM Krishna Ji was a remarkable leader, admired by people from all walks of life. He always worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others. He is fondly remembered for his tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister, particularly for his focus on infrastructural development. Shri SM Krishna Ji was also a prolific reader and thinker.” Modi wrote.

His association with the Congress lasted nearly five decades until he joined the BJP in 2017. Last year, due to his advancing age, he announced his retirement from active politics.

The veteran politician had contributed beyond Karnataka and to making India’s foreign policy during his tenure as External Affairs Minister. Recently, he was honored with the Padma Vibhushan, one of the highest civilian awards given by the nation for his service.
