The Union Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, announced the end of the current toll system. The government has introduced a satellite-based toll system in India. This new Satellite-based toll system in India will automatically deduct the toll amount from bank accounts based on the distance traveled. Gadkari highlighted that previously it took nine hours to travel from Mumbai to Pune. Now, this journey has been reduced to just two hours. He shared this update while discussing the Bharatmala Pariyojana.
Upgrading to Global Standards
The minister also stated his goal to upgrade India’s National Highway road network to the standards of America. He is confident that he can achieve this goal. In December 2023, Gadkari announced that the National Highways Authority of India aims to implement the new toll system by March 2024. Now the Government conducts pilot study on satellite-based toll collection in two national highways in India in July 2024.
Efforts to reduce waiting times at toll plazas have been shared with the World Bank. The introduction of FASTag has already reduced the average waiting time at toll plazas to just 47 seconds from the previous 714 seconds.
Gadkari reiterated that the ministry will implement a satellite-based toll system in India. This system will charge the toll amount according to the distance covered. The money will be deducted directly from the user’s bank account.

Moreover, there would be less risk of fraud as the satellite trackers are very efficient in tracking people therefore the people cannot run without paying the toll charges as the money will be directly deducted from the bank account which means everyone will have to pay the tax leading to more government revenue.
