BJP Slams Kerala Govt for Appointing a new Foreign Secretary in the State

Kerala new foreign secretary

Kerala government has recently appointed K Vasuki as the new foreign secretary of the state. The government said on July 15  “Dr. K Vasuki IAS (KL 2008), Secretary, Labour and Skills Department will hold the additional charge of the matters connected with the External Co-operation. The officer will co-ordinate and supervise all the matters in this regard and incidental thereto, in addition to the existing charges,”

This decision was met with a lot of criticism as the BJP government took a huge dig at it by stating that Kerala is not a separate state. Senior Congress leader said on Saturday that Kerala’s move of appointing new Foreign secretary in the state was “fairly unusual” and further said that Kerala has no foreign responsibility on its own.

The order stated that the Resident Commissioner at Kerala House in Delhi will support Vasuki with external cooperation. They will also work with the Ministry of External Affairs, as well as various missions and embassies.

The BJP state president criticized the LDF government’s actions. He said they have no authority in foreign affairs and that this move is unconstitutional. He also questioned if the Chief Minister is trying to make Kerala a separate nation. “The LDF government has no mandate in foreign affairs. This unconstitutional move sets a dangerous precedent. Is CM @pinarayivijayan trying to establish Keralam as a separate nation?” he said.

Shashi Tharoor clarified that foreign relations are managed by the Union government. He added that state governments do not have their own foreign relations. However, it is proper for state governments to interact with embassies abroad for issues related to their residents.
