On Wednesday the Constitutional Court made a surprising decision. It ruled that Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had violated the constitution. The issue arose from his appointment of a Cabinet member with a controversial past as this Cabinet member had previously served jail time for allegedly trying to bribe a court official. The court’s decision to remove Thailand Prime Minister Removed from Office came with a narrow 5-4 vote and the ruling not only ousted Srettha but also dismissed his entire Cabinet.

This party had won the last general election but was accused of violating the constitution by attempting to amend a law that protects the royal family from defamation. The Petition Against Srettha
The case against Srettha was initiated by former members of the military-installed Senate. These individuals had previously blocked the Move Forward Party’s attempt to form a government. Their petition against Srettha was seen as a move to favor a pro-military political party within his coalition. The Constitutional Court which many view as a tool of the royalist establishment played a crucial role in removing the Thailand Prime Minister from office.
What To Expect Now?
After the Thailand Prime Minister was removed from office the next steps are uncertain. Parliament will have to choose a new leader from the candidates nominated by the major political parties. Pheu Thai which is the party that Srettha represented, has two candidates in the running. One of them is Paetongtarn Shinawatra who is the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Other potential candidates include Anutin Charnvirakul who is a deputy prime minister and two former military officers who have previously held significant power in the government.
