The Adani Group is entering the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) sector. They plan to build the largest BESS installation in India and one of the biggest single-location BESS projects in the world. The company announced this on Tuesday. The project will take place in Khavda, Gujarat, and is expected to be finished by March 2026.
Adani Group plan to build the largest BESS installation
Chairman Gautam Adani commented on the initiative. He said, “Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future. With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability. This initiative will enable us to deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions at scale.”
Details of the Adani Group’s battery storage project include a power capacity of 1,126 megawatts (MW) and an energy capacity of 3,530 MWh. This means it can store enough energy to provide 1,126 MW of power for about three hours. Over 700 battery containers will be used. This makes it India’s largest and one of the largest single-location energy storage systems.
Increase energy storage capacity by add 15 GWh
The project will use lithium-ion battery technology and smart energy management systems to ensure top performance. It will help manage electricity demand during peak hours, shift energy use to different times, and reduce carbon emissions. Once completed, it will support grid stability and 24/7 renewable power. This will make Khavda the largest combined renewable and storage park in the world.
The Adani Group plans to further increase its energy storage capacity by adding 15 GWh by March 2027, eventually reaching 50 GWh within five years. The company’s statement highlighted that this plan shows a strong commitment to building a modern, clean, and reliable energy system that supports India’s net-zero and climate goals.
