Meet The Man behind Micromax, Rahul Sharma

In the early 2000s, Rahul Sharma didn’t simply dream of building industry, he built a revolution. Along with friends Rajesh Aggarwal, Vikas Jain, and Sumeet Arora, Rahul co-founded Micromax Informatics in 2000. The main concept behind it are IT software solutions. But things took a dramatic turn in 2008, after they launched their first mobile with budget friendly technology in India.

Transformation from ₹12,000 Cr Crash to ₹6,200 Cr Comeback

As thrilling as Micromax’s rise became, its fall was dramatic. Between 2010 to 2015, Micromax dominated India’s mobile market, raking in annual sales of Rs 12,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore. At one point, it held a 50% market share.

But the tech tide grew to become. Chinese brands entered with competitive pricing and cornered special deals with suppliers. Rahul Sharma defined the downfall like this on a podcast: “Bouncer pe bouncer pad raha tha, complete-toss pe bhi bowled ho rahe they.”

In 2014, Sharma grew to fall down $800 million (Rs 6,700 crore) in investment from Alibaba. In hindsight, a costly mistake. “We concept we’d already overwhelmed the Koreans and Finns; we could deal with the Chinese too,” he said in an interview.
