17 People including 4 Taiwanese arrested in a digital fraud of Rs 80 lakh in Ahmedabad

In a major crackdown, Ahmedabad Cyber Crime police arrested 4 Taiwanese nationals in a digital fraud of Rs 80 lakh from an elderly resident. These nationals were among 17 cybercriminals arrested by the police. All the criminals pretended as officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Cyber Crime authorities, coercing the victim into believing that his mobile number and bank account were being used for illegal activities.

A terrified elderly man was threatened for 10 days before the criminals swindled him out of Rs 80 lakh. The cheats had evolved the fraud by conducting several landline and video calls to give the impression that they were officials from some fake investigating agencies. Anchored by the threats and also being pressurized by the fear of legal trouble, the victim succumbed to their trap and sent money.

The Taiwan nationals are identified as Mu Chi Sung, Chang Hu Yun, Wang Chun Wei, and Shen Wei. Police have recovered more than 12 lac in cash and over 760 sim cards.

The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime team started an investigation promptly when the complaint came in. Police Commissioner Ajay Singhal said that the operation to catch the cybercrooks was complex since the racket was operating from numerous call centers designed to look like offices of genuine investigative agencies. These call centers operated from various states of Gujarat, Delhi, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Odisha and Maharashtra.

Attackers targetted more than a thousand people in India

The cyber thugs were conducting a very well-planned operation, targeting over 1,000 people across India. The people arrested were using advanced technology to defraud their victims of large sums of money.

The bust has been considered a huge success of law and order, as it exposes the rapidly emerging menace of cyber crime in India. The police continue to probe further for other associates and to unveil all those cases that have gone under their portfolio. As Ahmedabad Cyber Crime police arrest 17 cybercriminals, authorities asked the general public to be much more cautious against such scams and report immediately any suspicious activity.
