A CBI court convicted a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, on Saturday for the gangrape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. The crime, which stunned the nation with its brutality, triggered mass protests and demands for justice. The court found him guilty after long evidence and hearing of various testimonies under many sections, Section 64 and Section 103 for rape, causing death with Section 66, and murdering with Section 103.
The case was an offshoot of the brutal assault and subsequent death of the young doctor, an event that had taken huge headlines, raising urgent concern about safety inside medical institutions. Just a day after the crime, Sanjay Roy was apprehended on August 9, 2024. His conviction brings some relief to the family of the victim, though the quantum of punishment is scheduled to be announced on Monday.
Civic Volunteer Among Others Involved in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Rape Case
During the court proceedings, Roy alleged that others involved in the case, such as former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh—arrested for tampering with evidence but later released on bail—were being let off. In response, the presiding judge assured Roy that his concerns would be heard on Monday when sentencing will also be pronounced.
The charges Roy faces carry severe penalties: life imprisonment under Section 64 and the possibility of the death penalty under Section 66. This case serves as a chilling reminder of the responsibility to ensure women’s safety and justice for victims of heinous crimes.
Overwhelmed with emotion, the victim’s father broke down in the courtroom after hearing the verdict. “I kept full faith in the judiciary. Thank you for honoring our trust,” he said, expressing his gratitude to the court for delivering justice.
The sentencing on Monday will be closely watched as the nation continues to demand accountability and stricter enforcement of laws against sexual violence.
