Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) is a branch of the global terrorist group Al-Qaeda. It was created on September 3 2014 by Ayman al-Zawahiri who was the leader of Al-Qaeda at that time. AQIS aims to fight the governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Myanmar and Bangladesh and their goal is to establish an Islamic state and caliphate in the region.

The group was formed by merging different jihadist factions from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The first leader was Asim Umar who was an Indian national and former commander of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan while the current leader is Osama Mahmood. AQIS follows a strict Islamist ideology and wants to create an Islamic caliphate and they hold extremist views and are against Hindus, Zionists and the LGBT community.
