In Bahra University of Solan in Himachal Pradesh, once again the dangers of ragging and bullying come to view in a shocking incident. The hostel mates of 22-year-old MBA student Rajat Kumar held him hostage and gave him a thrashing after their fellow mate refused to drink alcohol.
The terrible incident had taken place in Bahra University hostel when the victim, Kumar, was forcefully dragged into a room by two students who first invited him. More and more students joined in the attack asking Kumar to consume liquor within the four walls. When Kumar refused, he was attacked with fists, kicks, and a belt.
The whole incident was recorded by one of the students on a cell phone. In that video clip, Kumar is helplessly sitting in a chair surrounded by the attackers. Every attempt at pacification was leading to a worse situation. The list of students who thrashed him included Chirag Rana, Divyansh, Karan Dogra, Kartik, and Saksham.
Student assault highlights dangers of ragging and bullying
The police first arrested Chirag, Divyansh, and Karan. The remaining two, Kartik and Saksham were arrested a few days later. When the university anti-ragging committee, asked the accused to appear, they denied it. Consequently, the dangers of ragging and harassment became crystal clear.
Following the complaint that Kumar lodged with the police at Kandaghat, it registered a relevant case under the sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009, against the accused students. Confirming the arrests, Solan superintendent of police Gaurav Singh said the accused would appear in the court.
That set off a huge furore over the dangers of ragging and bullying in educational institutions. An inquiry into the incident was launched by the university, as the anti-ragging committee probes the incident. This case highlights the urgent necessity to stop such attacks and ensure the security of students from ragging and bullying.
