Galgotias University Robot Demo Draws Accusations of Using Chinese Model

At the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi, a four-legged robotic dog captured a lot of attention among the demonstrations of advanced systems and bold statements about India’s tech future. This robotic dog, called “Orion,” showcased by a Galgotias University as part of its innovation display.

Within hours, videos of the demonstration started spreading online. Social media users claimed that the robotic dog not developed in India but was actually the Unitree Go2, an AI-powered robot made by the Chinese company Unitree and sold for around ₹2–3 lakh.

Why Galgotias University’s robot draw accusations

The criticism focused not on the robot’s abilities but on how it represent. Many users accused Galgotias University, based in Greater Noida, of showing imported technology as if it made in India. Screenshots and video clips sparked a growing debate about whether the robot misrepresented as a product of the university’s Centre of Excellence.

University’s Clarification

In response to the criticism, Galgotias University released a public statement on X (formerly Twitter). The university explained that the robotic dog “recently acquired” from Unitree and intended as a learning tool for students. It insisted that it never claimed to have created the machine.

The university portrayed this acquisition as part of a larger educational mission: to expose students to the latest global technologies so they could experiment and develop their own skills. The statement noted that innovation “knows no borders.”

In later comments, the university stressed that its goal was not to import technology for show but to encourage students to create world-class solutions in India.
