Violence erupted at VIT Bhopal late Tuesday due to growing anger over a jaundice outbreak on campus. Students claimed that poor hygiene and unsafe drinking water caused the illness, which has affected several hostellers in recent weeks, according to The Indian Express.
Students protest in VIT Bhopal over Jaundice outbreak
Tensions increased when nearly 4,000 students gathered and allegedly set multiple vehicles on fire. The chancellor’s bungalow and other university property also suffered significant damage. The university is located along the Indore-Bhopal highway in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district.
Police officials reported that the unrest intensified after about two dozen students showed symptoms related to jaundice over the past few weeks.
Students allege neglect and suppression of complaints
The report quoted a student who said the protest escalated because the administration kept ignoring their complaints without providing clear answers. The student added that their efforts to speak with officials about the illness, food quality, and water safety did not result in any real action.
VIT Bhopal Hostellers also claimed that staff and guards mistreated them when they raised these issues. They reported facing threats and even physical intimidation. Another student noted that the lack of concern and aggressive behavior pushed students to their limit.
