The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) announced that all schools in Kalimpong and Darjeeling under its jurisdiction will remain closed from October 8 to 10, 2025, because of severe weather conditions. This decision affects all primary and secondary schools, colleges—both general and technical—and other educational institutions, including government, government-aided, private, and missionary-run establishments.
Severe weather conditions in Kalimpong and Darjeeling disrupt connectivity
The closure follows heavy rainfall and landslides on October 4 and 5. These events have disrupted mobility and connectivity in the region. Reports indicate that several areas within the GTA have been cut off, with no road connectivity available. Anit Thapa, the Chief Executive of the GTA, confirmed that every area within the administration has been affected. Efforts are underway to assess the damage and restore normalcy.
Educational institutes to reopen on 13 October
Due to the ongoing adverse conditions, the GTA has decided to extend the closure of educational institutions in Darjeeling till October 10. The institutions are set to reopen on October 13, 2025, because of Saturday and Sunday. This schedule allows time for restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of students and staff. Authorities have urged everyone to take necessary precautions and stay updated on further announcements.
