Students with backgrounds in traditional music have been encouraged to explore engineering at IIT Madras, according to Professor V Kamakoti, the institute’s director. He highlighted the value of music education, urging parents to inspire their children to learn music early. He noted its link to scientific learning, especially in mathematics.
Professor Kamakoti made these remarks during the opening session of the 93rd annual South Indian Music Conference and Festival of Indian Fine Arts Society, a major cultural event in Chennai, held on December 17. He explained that music is based on scientific principles and plays an important role in education at IIT Madras.
IIT Madras director invite musicians
To support interdisciplinary education, IIT Madras is creating a bamboo-based mic-less auditorium. This new space will use natural materials and acoustics to improve performances without traditional sound systems. This innovation will expand opportunities for both engineering and music students.
Plans are also in progress to establish the Ilaiyaraya Centre for Excellence in Music at IIT. This center aims to encourage academic and research partnerships between music and technology, benefiting students passionate about both areas.
Future of interdisciplinary learning
The institute’s goal is to create a learning environment where students can easily collaborate across various fields. This approach enables them to address real-world challenges that span multiple disciplines. The announcements from the conference reflect IIT Madras commitment to combining music, science, and engineering, creating new learning opportunities for those interested in interdisciplinary education.
With the development of facilities like the bamboo auditorium and the Ilaiyaraya Centre for Excellence in Music, IIT continues to support students pursuing interests that connect the arts and engineering.
