OpenAI has launched a ‘India-first’ Learning Accelerator program. This marks one of its most significant commitments to the country’s education sector. The initiative was announced on Monday and includes the distribution of 500,000 free ChatGPT licenses to students and teachers. It also comes with a research grant of ₹4.5 crore (about $500,000) to IIT-Madras.
The program will conducts with IIT-Madras, the Ministry of Education, and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). A major part of this program is a research partnership with IIT-Madras. This partnership will look at how AI tools affect teaching practices, learning outcomes, and cognitive development. The results of the study will published to shape education policy and future product design.
5 lakh free ChatGPT licenses offered by OpenAI
In the next six months, half a million premium ChatGPT licenses will be given out for free. Teachers will have access to better tools for lesson planning and classroom activities. Students can use features like “Study Mode” and interactive quizzes. OpenAI highlighted that ChatGPT works well on basic smartphones and supports 11 Indian languages. It helps to bridge digital gap in the country.
Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s vice president of education, stated that the initiative is one of the company’s largest investments in education in India. She emphasized that this effort is vital to their mission of making sure AI benefits humanity.
Power up Indian Education
These announcements come as OpenAI plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year. The company has also introduced an India-specific subscription plan at ₹399 per month, which includes UPI payment options. Additionally, it has partnered with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to create the OpenAI Academy, an AI literacy program.
