PU Coffee House at the Student Centre will reopen on Thursday after closed for nearly a year. This closure followed the previous contractor’s exit due to financial issues, according to university officials.
The Coffee House shut down in January 2025 when the operator surrendered the lease, citing high operation costs and low customer turnout. This closure came after another shutdown in 2019, when the original South Indian Coffee House stopped operating. It was revived in 2023 through a new tender but struggled to stay open despite efforts to expand its menu.
PU Coffee House reopens after year
Once mainly known for South Indian dishes, the Coffee House is now trying to reinvent itself with a wider menu. The new owner, Suresh Sharma, says the setup now combines South Indian staples with North Indian cuisine and offers more drinks, along with a buffet section.
Suresh stated, “The revamp aims to attract more students and visitors to the Student Centre. In addition to South Indian food, we have included North Indian dishes and introduced a buffet so students have more choices. The buffet is priced at ₹130 to keep it affordable for students.” Sharma also mentioned that the buffet will be available from 8 am to 9 pm, which will be the same hours for the Coffee House.
New vendor appointed in coffee house
University officials confirmed that a new vendor has been appointed and the outlet has reopened after receiving the necessary approvals.
PU Coffee House has always been one of the most popular spots at the Student Centre. It has served as an informal meeting place for students, faculty, and alumni. Its lengthy closure noticeably affected foot traffic in the area, especially during high-activity times like student elections.
Students appear excited about the reopening. Many have a sense of nostalgia tied to the Coffee House, though some believe its long-term success will rely on pricing and consistency.
