Rising Tuition Fees abroad force students to choose cheaper options

Rising Tuition Fees and higher proof-of-funds requirements in the traditional big four study destinations, Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia, are causing Indian students to reconsider their options, according to a new report.

The “2026 Trends Report: Building and Rebuilding Global Education,” published by ApplyBoard, an international student mobility technology platform, shows that international students becoming more strategic in their study-abroad choices. They are prioritizing affordability, employability, and stable policies over prestige or tradition.

“Financial pressures and affordability are taking center stage. Rising tuition fees and higher proof-of-funds requirements in popular destinations are forcing students to rethink their options. Germany and Ireland now seen as some of the most affordable destinations, offering lower tuition fees and flexible post-study work periods,” the report said.

“France and Spain are attracting record enrollments, supported by national housing initiatives and simpler student visa pathways,” it added.

The report noted that stricter policies continue to disrupt the usual flow of international students to English-speaking countries.

Canada’s Study Permits Drop Sharply as Students Rethink Overseas Plans

“In Canada, new study permit issuances are projected to drop by 54 % year-over-year in 2025. Meanwhile, post-graduation work permit issuances could decline by 30 %. Australia and the UK are holding stable volumes but face reduced demand due to stricter compliance standards and increased living costs,” it said.

According to the report, while global demand for international education remains strong, changes in policies at major destinations and economic challenges are making students and families in India scrutinize their ROI more closely than ever.
