May, a 30-year-old factory worker, died in Thailand after her manager refused to give her sick leave. The young woman had major health problems but her manager still refused her more leave. This case, wherein a worker died as the manager denied sick leave, is making waves on the internet.

May was working for Delta Electronics in Sukhothai. She had been diagnosed with an inflamed large intestine. She was placed on sick leave from 5 to 9 September. The young lady filed a doctor’s note during the period. When she was discharged from the hospital, her condition grew worse. According to details, on September 12, she applied for additional sick leave and it was turned down by the manager. He declared that she needed to visit a doctor again so that he could grant her leave. Terrorized by the prospect of losing her job, May returned to work on September 13, even if it meant only on the orders of her superiors.

May dropped dead after only 20 minutes of shift. She was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery but died the following day. It raises very big questions about the rights and treatment of employees in Thailand’s industrial sector as the worker died as the manager denied sick leave.

Delta Electronics expressed its heartfelt grief over May’s death and issued a statement in support for her family. The company declared that the case will be made for an all-around investigation to uncover facts about her death. CEO Victor Cheng mourned the incident. But it is the case whereby a worker died as the manager denied sick leave which goes on to spark a fire in issues of protocols about sick leaves in workplaces.

Yet, with May’s death, comes the increased potential danger of neglecting an employee’s health. “The investigation is already underway and we urge patience for its progress,” a statement issued by the company says. “But to many people, the firm should be stronger in its labour and social protections.”.
