Australia Youtube Ban for children under 16, Effective from 10 December

Australia Youtube Ban for childrens under 16 years of age, a top minister said.  The Australia YouTube ban for youngsters under 16 follows a same actions taken by government last year, which banned them from using Meta Platforms Inc.’s Facebook and Instagram, Snap Inc.’s Snapchat, TikTok and X. It will be effective from 10 December onwards.

“Young peoples under the age of 16 will not able to have accounts on YouTube. They will also not be able to have accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and X and different platforms.

What behind Australia Youtube Ban for teens?

Communications Minister Anika Wells said 4-in-10 Australian childrens said viewing harmful content on YouTube, one of the most visited websites in the world. “We want children to know who they’re before platforms who they’re,” Wells said.

“There’s a place for social media, however there’s not a place for predatory algorithms focus on children.” The YouTube ban comes regardless of the country earlier except for the video-streaming platform from its list.

Now YouTube, along with Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and X, faces a A$49.5 million ($32.2 million) penalty if it fails to stop underage children from stopping to use the platforms.

How does YouTube reacts

A spokesman for YouTube said Wednesday’s statement become a jarring U-turn from the government. “Our position remains clear: YouTube is a video sharing platform with a library of free, brilliant content, increasingly viewed on TV screens,” the company said. “It’s not social media,” the agency said on its declaration over Australia Youtube Ban.
