Veteran actor and parliamentarian Jaya Bachchan isn’t one to mince words, and in a resurfaced episode of her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda’s podcast What The Hell Navya, she another time sparked debate again for blaming the net for the rise in anxiety amongst young people.
In the candid conversation, Jaya Bachchan expressed subject over how exposure to the digital world is affecting the mental health of Gen Z. You get your validation from what you see on the internet and your phone,” Jaya said. “Are we looking good? Are we thinking successfully? If you’re saying the right thing? All this increases your stress levels,” she said.
When Navya asked whether her generation is more careworn because of the internet, Jaya didn’t hesitate to say, “Definitely.” She also claimed that the concept of anxiety attacks didn’t exist at any point in her children or even midlife. “We hadn’t heard of an anxiety attack while we were children. Let alone our early life, we in no way heard it in our midlife also,” she stated. According to Jaya, “an high amount of records” around appearance, beauty exercises, and social evaluation is what anxiety in today’s generation.
Jaya’s Daughter Response over internet
However, Jaya Bachchan daughter, Shweta Bachchan, give a counterpoint. She argued that anxiety has constantly existed, however is now more widely occurs. “Anxiety was constantly there. It’s now more identifiable. It’s more spoken about,” Shweta said. She also mentioned that even Jaya herself has admitted to feeling disturbing, said, “It’s just extra vocal.”
