‘Putul’ Breaks New Ground for Bengali Cinema, Among Indian Films Eligible for 97th Academy Awards

Indira Dhar, who is directing and producing Making History, makes history of its own kind, as she becomes the first Bengali filmmaker to make it to the Best Picture category. Sharing her joy, Dhar said, “This recognition is not about my work but about every dreamer who dares to believe. I am deeply grateful to the Academy and my incredible team for making this possible. For a debut feature to reach this stage is a dream come true.

Notably, the voting for Oscar nominations will begin on January 8, 2025, and close on January 12. The final list of nominees will be released on January 17. The 97th Academy Awards will be held on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood.

Other Highlights from India

No shortlisting for Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, India’s official entry for Best International Feature Film. But Indian cinema manages to pull along well at the Oscars – Indian-rooted short film executive produced by Guneet Monga Anuja makes it to the Live Action Shortlist.

The Academy has also announced shortlists for 10 categories, including Best International Feature, Original Song, and Visual Effects, building up the excitement as the Oscars approach.

Visibly, Indian cinema continues to break boundaries, and these films represent diverse languages, cultures, and stories on a global platform.
