Hurun: List of top 10 self-made women billionaires in 2022

On March 29, The Hurun Research Institute released the Hurun Richest self-made Women in the World 2022. 

Furthermore, 5% of the world’s self-made billionaires are women. 

With 3381 billionaires globally, 72% are self-made, out of which 124 are women worth US$370bn. 

The remaining 2343 are self-made billionaire men worth US$10.5tn. 

What does the Hurun list of top 10 self-made women billionaires state?

Chairman and Chief Researcher of Hurun Report Rupert Hoogewerf said, “there are 124 self-made women billionaires in the world today, double that of five years ago and 100 more than ten years ago.”

“The self-made women billionaires in the world tell the story of the most successful women in business and these stories start with China.”

“Why does China have two-thirds of the world’s self-made women billionaires, more than double the rest of the world combined?”

“There are historical, political, social, and economic dynamics at play here. One indicator can be seen from the Hurun China Private Companies SDG Readiness Index 2021, where Chinese businesses performed strongly in United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 Gender Equality.”

“Self-made billionaire women represent 5% of the world’s known self-made billionaires, 124 compared with 2343 self-made billionaire men.”

“A comparison of the 124 self-made billionaire women with the top 124 self-made billionaire men threw up some interesting findings.”

“These men were much richer, by a factor of 11:1.”

“In fact, just Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos between them have more than all the billionaire self-made women combined.”

“By industry, billionaire self-made men were more likely to do Financial Services and Media, whilst billionaire self-made women were more likely to do Healthcare and Consumer Goods.”

“Guangdong in South China is the cradle of the world when it comes to self-made women billionaires.”

“Curiously, New York, the city with the most billionaires outside of China, has only a single self-made women billionaire.”

“India has tripled the number of self-made women billionaires over the last decade.”

“Japan, Germany, France, Canada, and S. Korea are the world’s largest economies without a single self-made women billionaire.”

“The 124 known self-made women billionaires come from just 16 countries, meaning that 180+ countries still do not have a single one.”

List of top 10 self-made women billionaires

A list of self-made women billionaires include:

Mumbai-based Falguni Nayar of Nykaa, with a net worth of US$7.6bn, soared into the Top 10. Falguni reigns by overtaking India’s long-time Number One Women Billionaire Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon. 

Despite a 24% dip to US$7.6bn, Beijing-based Zhao Yan of Bloomage held her position in the Top 10. 

Beijing-based ‘Real Estate Queen’ Wu Yajun of Longfor took back her crown of Richest Self-Made Women. Wu held Longfor’s value with low debts despite a significant dip in China’s real estate stock. 

However, Fan Hongwei of Suzhou-based Hengli held on to the second place, despite a 41% dip to US$13bn. Starting in 1994, Fan and her husband Chen Jianhua became the largest fibre producer in China. Last year, the sales of Hengli crossed US$100bn. 

Next on the list at 3rd position is Grace Wang Laichun of Dongguan-based Luxshare. Grace’s wealth dipped 21% to US$11bn. 

Zhong Huijuan’s wealth also dipped to US$10bn, dropping from last year’s 1st position to 4th in 2022. However, today, her company Hansoh circulates one in six Chinese FDA-approved new drugs on the market. 

Rising seven places to halt at 6th, ‘US Construction Queen’ Diane Hendricks is the wealthiest self-made women billionaire outside China. Her Wisconsin-based company ABC Supply reported revenues of US$12.1bn in 2020. Her net worth is US$9bn, up by 1%. 

Since 2016 Denise has been the highest-paid chief executive in the UK, earning almost US$2bn. The ‘Gambling Queen’ owns Bet365 and is one of the only two non-Chinese in the Top 10. 

Cheng Xue ‘Restaurant Queen’ of Haitian slipped to the 8th position with US$7.9bn down 31%. 

Last but not least, Zhou Qunfei, ‘Touchscreen Queen’ of Shenzhen-based Lens, reigned twice as the Number One Self-Made Woman in the World. This year her wealth dipped 50% to US$7.8bn, halting at the 9th position.

As women empowerment sweeps the globe, significant changes are taking place. In a decade, the number of self-made women billionaires has significantly increased. 

A positive change in pace could lead the world into a better future.
