The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has pushed back the deadline for filing income tax audit reports for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) from September 30 to October 31, 2025. This extension affects assesses mentioned in clause (a) of Explanation 2 to sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
CBDT extends tax audit deadline on CA associations request
In a press release on September 25, 2025, CBDT said that the decision follows requests from professional groups, including Chartered Accountant associations, which pointed out the challenges in completing audit reports on time.
Floods and other natural disasters in certain areas posed significant obstacles, impacting businesses and audit professionals. This issue has also been raised in the High Courts.
CBDT noted that the Income Tax e-filing portal has running well, with over 4.02 lakh Tax Audit Reports uploaded by September 24 and more than 7.57 crore income tax returns filed as of September 23.
Tax payers get relief
The extension offers vital relief to taxpayers and professionals by giving them an extra month to submit audit reports without penalties. By allowing this additional time, CBDT seeks to balance compliance with the real situations affecting operations and the environment.
Officials stressed that while the system can handle submissions effectively, the extension acknowledges the pressures and disruptions facing taxpayers and practitioners.
