Nepal released new ₹100 currency notes that show a revised map. This map includes Indian territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura as part of Nepalese territory, according to news agency PTI.

New Nepal ₹100 currency notes released

The new note from the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) features the signature of former Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari. It has an issue date of 2081 BS, which corresponds to 2024.

An NRB spokesperson told PTI that the map was already on the old ₹100 banknote and has been updated based on the government’s decision. Among various denominations, such as ₹10, ₹50, ₹500, and ₹1,000, only the ₹100 note includes Nepal’s map.

In May 2020, the K P Sharma Oli-led government introduced a new political map. This map identified Lipulek, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura as part of Nepal. The Parliament later endorsed this move.

India described this “unilateral act” as “artificial enlargement” and said it is “untenable.” India maintains that Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura are Indian territories. In 2024, when Kathmandu announced the new 100 rupee currency note, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said that Nepal’s decision to include Indian territories in its currency won’t change the situation or the facts on the ground.

“Our position is very clear. We are discussing boundary matters with Nepal through an established platform. In the middle of that, they unilaterally took some actions on their side,” he said. The border between Nepal and India stretches over 1,850 km and connects five Indian states: Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
