Safety is questioned after a man died suddenly two weeks after a dental operation that involved the extraction of 23 teeth in one day. Not only this, the procedure also included the fixation of 12 implants. This scary procedure took place in eastern China on August 14 at Yongkang Deway Dental Hospital for a man, surnamed Huang.
Huang died from a heart attack on 28 August, 14 days after the dental procedure. The daughter of Huang, Shu, made the incident public on 2 September. She had said that her father had been suffering from pain since the extraction of 23 teeth in one day and she could not understand how he suddenly died.
The Yongkang Municipal Health Bureau is investigating whether the dental procedure contributed to Huang’s death. The officials have noted a 13-day gap between the dental work and his heart attack. The clinic has forwarded the case to their lawyer and will not comment until the investigation is over.
Dental expert Xiang Guolin said there are no official guidelines on the number of teeth that can be extracted during one session. “extraction of 23 teeth in one day in one go would necessitate highly skilled professionals,” said Xiang. Xiang also underscored that such extensive dental work requires consideration of a patient’s physical condition.
The case received very controversial reviews on social media. Many were just in a state of shock, as they were aware that extraction of 23 teeth in one day in a single session was not possible. One dentist also remarked that the treatment was reckless and more or less a human experiment. There is as yet no confirmation whether the procedure was the direct cause of Huang’s heart attack.
The investigation will perhaps clear up the possible connection between the dental procedure and his death. Public responses have pointed out apprehensions about the safety and ethics of mega dental procedures. Surveys of opinions from the public have queried the wisdom of doing such an extensive treatment on the same day.
