Delhi is set to celebrate Diwali today. Government buildings are decorated, and diyas will light up popular places, including the Red Fort. These celebrations are part of India’s effort to have Diwali recognized on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Delhi lighten up like Diwali Being World Heritage Site
During the festivities, the Chandni Chowk area will feature colorful rangolis, and special Diwali markets will be set up across the city. Fireworks will shine in the night sky. The Ministry of Culture has also ordered that all World Heritage Sites nationwide be illuminated with diyas for the occasion.
Delhi is celebrating Diwali now because its December celebrations are linked to India’s goal of getting UNESCO recognition for the festival. The city is hosting the 20th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage from December 8 to 13. In its submission, India described Diwali as one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world.
Diyas lightning, cultural performance and exhibitions at Red Fort
The main venue for this year’s Diwali celebrations is the Red Fort. Top officials and international guests will attend to enjoy cultural performances, the ceremonial lighting of diyas, and exhibitions related to Diwali. The goal is to make the Capital vibrant with festive celebrations.
On Tuesday evening, the Delhi Secretariat was beautifully lit with festive colors—orange, white, and green. Golden lights on the roofline added sparkle and created a celebratory atmosphere throughout the country. Decorative LED lights were also placed at the entrance to enhance the festive look for the UNESCO events and Diwali celebrations.
