The barbaric incident occurred during a Durga idol immersion procession clash at Maharajganj, Bahraich. The postmortem reports established the fact that more than 30 pellets had pierced the chest of Ram Gopal Mishra, thus establishing the fact that he had been shot multiple times during the clash.

Eyewitness accounts reflect that the skirmish had resulted in the capture of Mishra by members of Salman and Hamid’s household. Mishra was reportedly shot dead as tensions were beginning to escalate, while multiple pellet wounds had been found in his postmortem report.
Immediately after the incident, the police were searching the house to locate the weapon but were not able to find it. The report on the attack cited that it was barbaric, especially as evidenced by electric shocks and his nails being pulled out.
