ISRO Chairman S Somanath has suggested setting up libraries in temples to attract youngsters to places of worship. ISRO advised libraries in temples when he receiving an award from the Sree Udiyannoor Devi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Somanath suggested that the temples should not be only for old people who are performing nama japa but they should also be for the next generation.
Importance of Engaging Youth
Somanath requested temple managements to work towards attracting young people to temples as he observed a low number of youngsters at the award ceremony and told the need for ways to bring these youngsters into the temples. He suggested, “Why not set up libraries in temples?” ISRO advised libraries in temples to provide a space for youth to read, discuss issues and develop their careers.

Transforming Temples into Learning Hubs
Developing the temples into centers for learning and cultural engagement could bring significant changes in the views of Somanath. He believes that libraries in temples can become places where youth can gather in the evenings to read and discuss various topics which could help in their personal and professional development.
Former ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair presented the award to S Somanath and he supported this innovative idea. He said that engaging youth in helpful activities at temples could help improve cultural heritage and also promote learning.
Other notable figures attended the event including Former Chief Secretary K Jayakumar and V K Prasanth MLA. They agreed to the potential benefits of Somanath’s suggestion for building the library in the temples.
