Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 begins in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. Millions of devotees from India and around the world thronged the festival, believed to attract more than 45 crore devotees, out of whom 15 lakh are reportedly international visitors, as part of a significant cultural and religious congregation. On the first “Shahi Snan” on the occasion of Pauh Purnima, a massive gathering was witnessed at the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati rivers meet, with over 60 lakh people taking the holy dip by 8 am.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 and called it a “confluence of faith, devotion, and culture.” He reiterated the importance of the event in the conservation of India’s spiritual heritage and unifying all sections of society. PM Modi appreciated the numerous devotees thronging the venue and wished them well in respect of their sojourn in Prayagraj.
After a gap of 144 years, this is being held as a more spectacular show than the 2019 Kumbh, which had seen the footfalls of 24 crore attendees. Expressing his hopes that Maa Ganga would fulfill all the wishes of each devotee coming to participate in this sacred congregation, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the state government, working in tandem with central agencies, has estimated the event at approximately Rs 7,000 crore with optimal sanitation, security, and a “digital Kumbh” experience.
