The mother of an Indian-origin OpenAI whistleblower, whose body was found dead in his San Francisco apartment last month, has raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding his death. She has alleged foul play, saying her investigation using ChatGPT and a private investigator contradicts the police’s version of events.
In an interview with India Today, she said that she used ChatGPT and a private investigator to examine her son’s death. According to her, both of them suggested that the official story of suicide didn’t match what was found in the scene. She said that the blood stains that were found in his apartment did not tally with what could be expected if he had died by suicide.
Bloodstains were found, says mother of Indian-origin OpenAI whistleblower
“There were marks of a scuffle in the bathroom, and when we produced the images in front of ChatGPT, the blood stains did not coincide with a suicidal scene,” she said. “We also have separate bloodstains in the bathroom, which makes us believe he could have been hit. There was no suicide note as well.“
A 26-year-old whistleblower who has not yet been named used to work for OpenAI till August. The whistleblower had publicized his discontent over the collection of data at the company, raising concerns of copyright infringement for ChatGPT. His death has gained massive attention, and it is more so because his mother claims he did not take his own life.
Mother claims that police dismissed key evidence
The mother took it a notch higher and said that the police dismissed the key evidence. While investigating, the authorities checked the CCTV footage at the front entrance of the apartment but failed to account for the lack of cameras at the back and garage doors. The mother argues this could have allowed someone to enter undetected.
She hired a private investigator who also questioned the suicide theory. According to her, the investigator believes the evidence points to foul play rather than self-harm.
Elon Musk, a former funder of OpenAI, was seen to sympathize with the mother’s complaint. She lodged an appeal before the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, stating that the tech community in San Francisco may be biased against her in this case. “My son wanted to make a difference,” she said. “Now our dreams have been taken from us.”
