The issue concerns the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9. According to Asha Devi the Chief Minister should have taken immediate and strict action against the culprits but failed to do so.
Speaking about the incident Nirbhaya’s mother stated that as a woman and the head of the state Mamata Banerjee should have acted responsibly therefore Nirbhaya’s Mother Calls for Mamata Banerjee’s Resignation. Asha Devi said that Mamata Banerjee has failed in her duty to address the issue and as a result she should step down. She further accused the Chief Minister of misleading the public instead of taking concrete measures to bring justice to the victim.
According to Asha Devi that instead of using her position to ensure justice Mamata Banerjee led a protest march diverting attention from the real issue. Asha Devi highlighted how the Chief Minister’s actions seem to be more about deflecting blame than solving the problem.

Comparison to the Nirbhaya Case
The August 9 incident in Kolkata has drawn comparisons to the horrific 2012 gang rape of Nirbhaya in Delhi. Sanjoy Roy who is a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police was arrested for his involvement in the crime. The incident has once again caused conversations about women’s safety and the lack of justice. In the Nirbhaya case after a long legal battle four of the convicts were hanged in March 2020. Yet Asha Devi believes that more needs to be done to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
Calls for Immediate Action
Asha Devi warned that such crimes will continue unless governments at both central and state levels start taking serious steps toward securing quick punishment for rapists. She pointed out that until decisive action is taken these brutal acts will keep occurring.
The incident in Kolkata has led to protests. Asha Devi’s call for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation has added more weight to the public demand for accountability. Many agree that Mamata Banerjee being both the Chief Minister and the Home Minister should have prioritized taking action against the perpetrators rather than staging protests.
