A link emerged between the blast near Delhi’s famous Red Fort, which killed 9 people, and the “white collar” terror group that police teams from Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana uncovered. The car involved in the explosion belonged to a doctor from Pulwama in south Kashmir. He was part of the group, according to top sources who confirmed this early Tuesday morning.
Red Fort bomb blast, terror attack, Kills 13
The authorities are treating the blast as a terror attack. The Delhi Police invoked sections 16 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for acts of terrorism and related punishments. They also included sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, along with charges of murder and attempted murder.
Dr. Umar Mohammad, the car’s owner, panicked and triggered the explosion near the Red Fort. It occur after investigators arrested two key members of the group, Dr. Mujammil Shakeel and Dr. Adil Rather. The police had also seized 2,900 kg of suspected explosives in Faridabad over the past few days, sources said.
Blast through the car
Sources shows that the target anywhere in central Delhi, because the car seen traveling from the Red Fort to the city center. Police and intelligence agencies believe a large amount of ammonium nitrate was used in the attack. The substance recovered during the raids also suspected to ammonium nitrate, which is commonly used in fertilizers but also used to create bombs.
The blast happened just hours after police in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana recovered thousands of kilos of suspected explosives. Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told reporters that a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light, then an explosion occurred in that vehicle, damaging nearby cars as well.
