91% Indians support Waqf Amendment Bill, 8% show strong resistance

Local Circles cites a recent survey that indicates Indians support Waqf Amendment Bill. The results show 91% support for this Amendment Bill. Based on a sample size of over 47,000 participants, the survey found strong backing for change in the existing Waqf Act. A citizen’s demand for transparency in Waqf property management has made the Indians reinforce the Amendment Bill campaign very popular.

The survey, covering 388 districts, found that the respondents opposed the proposed amendments only by 8%. So, the report is going to be submitted before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further consultation. And that again makes it clear that there is a strong demand for reform. Notably, 96% of the participants insisted that Waqf properties be registered with district collectors.

Moreover, 9 out of 10 respondents want the Waqf Act to be amended, which again reiterates that Indians support the Waqf Amendment Bill for a more just form of governance. An overwhelming 93% said they oppose the use of Waqf tribunals in property disputes.

Indians support Waqf Amendment Bill but a few per cent are not happy

Instead, they want such cases to be tried in the district courts, high courts, or even in the Supreme Court. As Indians support Waqf Amendment Bill, it would provide the status of Waqf properties as determined by the district collector. This also includes Muslim women and non-Muslims in the body of Waqf.

Another provision to be struck off is Section 40, which gives power to the Waqf boards to declare properties as Waqf. The survey gathered varied views from Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and many others. Such all-around support for reformation is why Indians are strongly supportive of this bill.

This was initiated by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, which contains more than 40 amendments and looks to bring transparency into the Waqf administration. Public opinion thereby mirrors the increasing agreement towards reform in the management of Waqf property with a view to an accountable system.
