Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced the list of banned OTT channels that are now prohibited for hosting undesirable, lewd, vulgar/pornographic content. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan announced this step in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday citing the IT Rules, 2021.
List of banned OTT channels
The list of banned OTT platforms comprises Dreams Films, Voovi, Yessma, Uncut Adda, and Tri Flicks, and so on. The platforms, Neon X VIP, Besharams, Hunters, and Rabbit, also came under limitation. The IT Rules 2021 impose certain due diligence obligations on intermediaries and online content providers, to avoid facilitating the exposure of obscenity and pornography.

Murugan stated that based on the Code Of Ethics for digital media publishers, it is mandatory to follow journalistic standards set by the Press Council of India and the Programme Code under The Cable Television Network Regulation Act, 1995. Such provisions are aimed at controlling digital media and OTT content while considering public sensibilities.
The prohibited OTT channels were violating this rule
As per Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021, the state has the power over block provision of content in the interest of national sovereignty, public order and security. The list of restricted OTT sites was found to have violated these provisions. MoodX, Mojflix, Hot Shots VIP, and Fugi are just some of the names to be targeted.
Murugan further stressed that the publishers of news/current affairs including YouTube channels like Bolta Hindustan and National Dastak are under scrutiny for the IT Rules.
