Bangladesh Imposes Curfew Amid Deadly Job Protests

Bangladesh curfew job protests

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government announced a nationwide curfew in Bangladesh on Friday and also commanded military forces to maintain law and order due to days of clashes over the government job protests. The protest began several weeks ago but it was becoming alarming and deadly day by day therefore it became a huge challenge for the Prime Minister Hasina.

The announcement of the curfew was made by Obaidul Quader who is the general secretary of ruling Awami league. Before this announcement police and general officers fired on protestors early friday which had led to 105 people killed which is a huge challenge for Hasina’s government. “The government has decided to impose a curfew and deploy the military in aid of the civilian authorities,” Ms Hasina’s press secretary, Nayeemul Islam Khan, told AFP.

Job protests and Curfew Situation in Bangladesh

On Thursday this protest took the life of 22 people who desperately wanted a job. This chaos in Bangladesh has told the government that young youth are desperately looking for jobs while there are less businesses in Bangladesh which have led to less job opportunities for young youth.

The police in Dhaka had already taken the measure in which they banned all the public meetings and gatherings for a day inorder to counter the violence. “We’ve banned all rallies, processions and public gatherings in Dhaka today,” police chief Habibur Rahman told AFP, adding the move was necessary to ensure “public safety”.

Despite an internet shutdown, clashes continued between police and protesters in the city of 20 million people. The protests began with students angry about quotas. These quotas reserve 30% of government jobs for families of independence fighters from Pakistan. High unemployment among young people has added to the unrest. Young people make up nearly 20% of the 170 million population.

How To Correct This Situation?

The government of Bangladesh should aim to create more jobs for the people. This is possible by reducing the taxes of the people which will give people some relief and they will continue to buy more commodities due to more disposable income. As the demand for commodities will increase the firms will need more labour to supply more which will create more job opportunities for the people of Bangladesh and reduce the unemployment.

Secondly, Bangladesh could attract more multinational firms which will start their operations in Bangladesh so they will also need labour. This will likely reduce unemployment in Bangladesh as multinational firms will employ people in large quantities. The Government of Bangladesh could also support new business start ups by giving them subsidies and encourage people to do business rather than jobs by reducing the corporate tax.
