A video of BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri making a sexist remark against Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has gone viral on social media. The remarks, which he made during a speech on the election promises of his party ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, have blown up into a political storm.
Bidhuri is the candidate of the BJP from the Kalkaji constituency that goes to the polls next month. The main rival would be Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi. The row has polarized the political discourse in the capital.
Congress leaders come forward against sexist remark by BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate attacked Bidhuri, saying his remarks were “shameful” and that the BJP was building an “anti-women” mindset. “This shows their real face. Bidhuri has a history of using derogatory language in Parliament without facing consequences. This is who they are,” Shrinate said in a statement. The detailed statement reads:
“Ramesh Bidhuri’s statement regarding Priyanka Gandhi is not only shameful but also shows his disgusting mentality towards women. But what else can be expected from a man who used foul language against his fellow MP in the House and did not receive any punishment? This is the real face of BJP,”
Not to be left behind, AAP MP Sanjay Singh joined the chorus of condemnation by posting the video on X. “Can women in Delhi feel safe under BJP’s leadership? This is how BJP respects women,” Singh questioned, pointing at the language Bidhuri used.
Amid the backlash, Bidhuri defended his statement by pointing to a past comment allegedly made by Lalu Prasad Yadav about Hema Malini. He argued, “If Congress apologizes for their leader’s remarks, we’ll do the same.” However, he later posted a message on X expressing “regret” if his words hurt anyone while maintaining his remarks were taken out of context.
This is not the first time he is engaged in controversy
This is not the first controversy Bidhuri has been embroiled in. In 2023, he was accused of using Islamophobic slurs against then-MP Danish Ali in the parliament. Despite public outrage, the BJP did not come down heavily, which only perpetuates the opposition’s charge that such incidents are silently condoned.
With a view to further escalate the clash before the election, Congress leaders, including Alka Lamba, have vowed to register a formal FIR against Bidhuri. The battle in Kalkaji reflects the raging debate over gender and accountability in political India.
