Prime Minister Narendra Modi today formally inaugurated 1,675 residential units meant for residents of slum clusters and announced two mega urban redevelopment projects in Delhi. The event marked the government’s commitment to developing affordable housing and infrastructure but also became a platform for political battles.
At the event in Ashok Vihar, Prime Minister Modi handed over keys to beneficiaries of the newly built flats under the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project. The homes, under the government’s affordable housing scheme, are being sold for about ₹25 lakh each, with beneficiaries paying only ₹1.42 lakh and ₹30,000 for maintenance for five years.
PM Modi comments on launching residential units and redevelopment projects in Delhi
In his remarks to the assembly, Prime Minister Modi delineated the differences between his approach to leadership and that of Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while also critiquing the purported extravagant spending associated with the Chief Minister’s residence. “I could have constructed a palace for myself, but I constructed more than 4 crore homes for the impoverished,” Modi stated, alluding to the debate surrounding the opulent renovations of Kejriwal’s official bungalow.
Modi further alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has transformed Delhi into a zone of disaster over the previous ten years. He commented, “AAP has descended as a calamity on Delhi,” while condemning the party’s administration and highlighting its inception during Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign.
Apart from the housing project, PM Modi also inaugurated two redevelopment projects: the World Trade Centre at Nauroji Nagar and GPRA quarters at Sarojini Nagar. The World Trade Center replaces more than 600 old buildings with modern commercial towers and offers 34 lakh square feet of premium office space.
The event comes ahead of Delhi’s assembly elections, scheduled for February. PM Modi’s focus on housing and infrastructure is seen as part of the BJP’s strategy to connect with urban voters.
Earlier, Modi called the day significant for Delhi’s progress, tweeting, “Today’s projects will improve ‘Ease of Living’ for Delhi residents.”
