Senior BJP Leader and Former Odisha Minister Passes Away at 67

Cuttack: Former Odisha minister and senior BJP leader Samir Dey passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Cuttack at 67. The veteran leader, fondly known as “Dada,” had been battling pneumonia and multiple health complications.

Dey’s condition worsened on November 1, and he was hospitalized. According to his attending physician, Dr. Sampad Das, “He was in the ICU with severe lung damage and immune system failure. He died of cardiac arrest due to multiple organ failure inspite of being on ventilator support and dialysis.”

He is known for his commitment to public service. He has gone through some very important portfolios in the course of his political career. He was the Odisha Minister of Higher Education from 2004-2009 and Urban Development Minister from 2000-2004 under the Naveen Patnaik government. Dey was an MLA for Cuttack City, which he represented consecutively for three terms. He had won in 1995, 2000, and 2004.

Political circles and his fans are left stunned as news of his death has spread. Leaders from both sides sent out condolence messages describing him as an ardent politician who always put the interests of his constituents first.

This loss marks the nation’s celebration of Diwali 2024, which will now be a time of festivity marred by the passing of a respected leader. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mourned the loss, terming Dey as “a stalwart of Odisha politics.”
