Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has made a strong declaration against interference in religious properties. Addressing a recent controversy Thackeray asserted that he would not allow anyone to tamper with Waqf properties or any other religious sites. Uddhav Thackeray’s warning comes during growing concerns over the Waqf Bill, 2024 which has caused debate and protests.
In his statement Thackeray said that both Waqf Board properties and other religious sites including temples would remain protected and Uddhav Thackeray’s Warning On Waqf Bill told his determination. He stated “Be it Waqf Board or any temple or other religious property I will not let anyone touch those properties at any cost. This is my promise.” His firm stance has been seen as an effort to reassure both Muslim and Hindu communities that their sacred spaces will be safeguarded.
Gold Allegations at Kedarnath
Thackeray also referenced a recent claim made by Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand. The spiritual leader had alleged that over 200 kilograms of gold were stolen from the Kedarnath temple. Thackeray called for an investigation into the matter highlighting the need for transparency in all religious institutions. “This is not just about the Waqf Board; it’s a matter of our temples as well. Shankaracharya says that 200 kg of gold was stolen from Kedarnath, and that should be looked into,” he said.

Muslim Protest Outside Matoshree
A group of Muslim community members recently gathered outside Thackeray’s residence in Matoshree to protest the absence of Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs during the discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and Uddhav Thackeray’s Warning On Waqf Bill in the Lok Sabha. The protestors accused Thackeray of betraying their trust after receiving their votes. They raised slogans demanding answers and criticized the party for not opposing the bill.
The bill was later referred to a joint parliamentary committee for further review. This decision has caused concerns within the Muslim community who see the Shiv Sena (UBT)’s ambiguous stance as a potential betrayal especially after they extended significant support to the party in recent elections.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has found itself in a difficult position. The party has traditionally been seen as a pro-Hindu force but in recent years Uddhav Thackeray has sought to build bridges with the Muslim community. This balancing act has left the party open to criticism from both sides. The BJP has accused Thackeray of abandoning Hindutva in favor of appeasing Muslim voters while some Muslims feel let down by the party’s lack of clear opposition to the Waqf Bill.
