Union minister Kiren Rijiju today slammed the opposition’s no-trust motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, saying the move was uncalled for. The motion, signed by more than 50 MPs across several parties, including Congress and Trinamool Congress, accuses Dhankhar of being partisan. Rijiju reminded the Opposition that NDA has a majority in Rajya Sabha. “The notice must be rejected, and it will be rejected. This is unthinkable,” he said.
The Union minister Kiren Rijiju jumped to the Chairman’s defense, citing how he guided the House from the chair for its smooth functioning. He faulted Congress and its allies in the Opposition for disrespecting the chair time and again. Mr. Dhankhar, having come from a humble background is deserving of respect. The method of approach by the opposition only points to their unprincipled stand on parliamentary decorum, Rijiju said.
Union minister Kiren Rijiju says the oppositions move is to deflect attention from failures
The no-confidence motion, initiated essentially by Congress, found support among MPs from diverse parties, including AAP, DMK, and Samajwadi Party at odds with each other on various occasions. Union minister Kiren Rijiju pointed to the curious coalition that has come together over the issue. “This is a desperate attempt by the Opposition to deflect attention from their failures,” he added.
The dispute arose after Dhankhar permitted a discussion on allegations of Congress’s links with billionaire investor George Soros. The BJP has accused Congress of colluding with Soros to destabilize India. In response, Congress criticized the Chairman for allowing the ruling party’s agenda while rejecting Opposition demands for discussions on other pressing matters.
Union minister said the NDA was committed to maintaining standards in Parliament and dubbed the motion a “political move”. “The Opposition’s tactics won’t succeed. Respecting the chair is non-negotiable,” he said.
