Gujarat Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi announced that the state government will change the marriage registration process. This is aimed at stopping misuse by “anti-social elements,” particularly those who conceal their identity to “trap daughters of Gujarat” for “Love Jihad.”
Gujarat mandate parents consent for marriage registration
Sanghavi announce these changes during the ongoing assembly session in Gandhinagar. A marriage registration certificate now require a mandatory declaration from both the bride and groom. They must state that they have informed their parents about the marriage and provide their parents’ identity proofs, phone numbers, and residential proofs, among other documents. One key change is that the assistant registrar must notify the parents within ten days after receiving applications.
Aim to preserve traditional values and marriage system
The new rules state, “The Assistant Registrar shall forward the application to the concerned district or taluka registrar. After verification and ensuring compliance with Sub-Rules (1 to 7), the marriage registered after completion of 30 days from the date of application.”
The registrar will upload these details on a web portal that the state government plans to develop, Sanghavi said. While proposing the changes, he mentioned that they stem from the government’s commitment to preserving traditional values and the marriage system.
“To ensure the safety of daughters and maintain the social structure, the government make significant changes to the marriage registration process under the ‘Gujarat Marriage Registration Act 2006.’ As part of these changes, parents now included in the marriage registration process,” he said.
Sanghavi stated, “Anti-social elements had been misusing the process by hiding their identity to trap daughters of the state.” He cited cases of fake marriage certificates issued in the Panchmahal district, where hundreds of nikah certificates issued in villages without any Muslims present. He also mentioned that the government has asked for suggestions and objections from citizens over the next 30 days before implementing these changes.
