Gmail users may finally see a long-awaited change that many thought would never happen. Google seems to be working on a new feature that could let users change their Gmail email address. Traditionally, once an account is created, the address is locked.
While Google has allowed users with non-Gmail login emails to make changes for years, those with an “@gmail.com” address have usually been stuck with what they chose on day one. That situation seems set to change, and interestingly, India could be among the first markets to notice this update.
Google update rollout soon to change their Gmail Address
Clues about this feature have appeared on a Google support page discussing a new option for Gmail users that will roll out gradually. According to the page, Google is getting ready to let people change their Gmail address even if it ends with “@gmail.com.” This marks a clear shift from Google’s long-standing policy, which stated that Gmail addresses generally cannot be changed once created.
The support page explaining the new process is currently available only in Hindi, which has raised eyebrows and led to speculation that the rollout may start with Indian users or, at the very least, that India is one of the early regions seeing these changes documented.
@gmail.com will changed to new Gmail address
What makes this update particularly notable is how Google plans to handle existing data and account access. Users who switch to a new Gmail address will not lose access to their old one. Instead, the original Gmail ID will become an alias.
Google explains the importance of the account email and said, “The email address associated with your Google Account is the address you use to sign in to Google services. This email address helps you and others identify your account.” It then adds that users will be able to change a Gmail address ending in “@gmail.com” to a new Gmail address, something that was not possible earlier.
