Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the government is working to implement vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology to prevent road accidents. This system alerts drivers in real time about the speed, location, and acceleration of nearby vehicles. It also identifies cars in blind spots and monitors sudden braking in the area, allowing drivers to react quickly.

To support this initiative, a joint task force has been created with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). “The DoT has agreed in principle to allocate 30 MHz of spectrum within the 5.875 to 5.905 GHz band for V2V purposes,” Gadkari said during a press conference after the annual meeting of transport ministers from all states and Union Territories. The minister emphasized that this wireless technology will enable cars to communicate directly with each other.

V2V Communication improve road design

V2V communication technology will play a key role in the government’s efforts to reduce road accident. This approach includes better road design, stricter law enforcement, and harsher penalties for traffic violations. Nitin Gadkari stressed the need for these measures, noting that India experiences about 500,000 road accidents each year, resulting in 180,000 deaths. Alarmingly, about 66 percent of these accident occur among people aged 18 to 34.

The integration of V2V communication technology will be supported by the government’s plan to introduce 61 amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act during the upcoming Budget session of Parliament. These amendments aim to improve road safety, make it easier to do business, and enhance citizen services.
