When will India launch its first Artificial Intelligence Chip?

India is making waves in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor technology with a three-pronged mission set for completion in 2025. This achievement was confirmed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. India is on the verge of launching its first Artificial Intelligence chip including a shared computing resource with 10,000 GPUs, building a strong AI workforce pipeline, and achieving AI-enabled applications. These procedures place India at the forefront of AI innovation as a global hub, in line with the medium- to long-term vision for technological leadership of the nation.

India set to launch its first Artificial Intelligence chip, Union Minister shares details

Emphasizing India’s strategic initiative, Vaishnaw disclosed that a high-level task force headed by the principal scientific advisor is in the process of finalizing policy suggestions to provide a balanced regulation framework that facilitates innovation while also maintaining regulation.

AI’s ability to address pressing problems in healthcare, weather prediction, supply chain management, and design is one of the key motivations behind India’s mission, however, the societal effects of AI continue to be an important factor of concern.

The Union Minister added:

“We just completed the semiconductor roundtable with senior professionals, CEOs of the semiconductor industry, and all of them expressed their huge satisfaction at the progress of the India Semiconductor Mission. Many of them met Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they came for the second edition of the event,”

The AI roadmap for India, in the future, also encompasses the development of an AI chip made in India and an AI model made in India, as a way to increase homebred capabilities. These innovations are related to India’s wider national effort to achieve technological indigenization.

Vaishnaw shares an update on India’s semiconductor mission

India’s semiconductor mission (launched in January 2022) and the AI mission are complementary. Vaishnaw also confirmed that five semiconductor units are in the process of being built, with construction of the first Made in India chip slated to be completed by the end of the year. At a semiconductor roundtable, industry executives remained confident in the progress of this mission and reasserted India’s role as a major contributor to the world semiconductor market.

India’s participation at the five-day WEF gathering where almost 3,000 attendees representing 130 countries interacted, offers its perspective on technological developments in the country, investment destination, and partnership strengthening. Joining the meeting were 5 Union ministers and 3 chief ministers of various states from across the globe. Notably, the meet-up aims to use India’s platform to become a global trailblazer in sustainable and innovative development.
