Delhi weather forecast: Heavy rain lashed Delhi and its surrounding areas early on December 27, throwing traffic into chaos in several parts of the capital. More rainfall with colder temperatures in the next few days, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.
The rain, which started at 2:30 am, resulted in waterlogging in parts of south, central, and north Delhi, giving a nightmare to morning commuters. The Safdarjung observatory, the main weather station of Delhi recorded 9.1 mm of rain till 11:30 am. Similar readings were obtained from the other observatories at Palam – 8.4 mm, Lodhi Road – 10.8 mm, Ridge – 9 mm, Delhi University – 11 mm and Pusa – 9.5 mm.
The IMD officials explained that the rain was on account of an active western disturbance interacting with the easterly winds. As per Naresh Kumar, a senior scientist at IMD this weather system is presently located near Punjab and adjoining areas. It will also cause light rain or snowfall over parts of the western Himalayan region thereby perpetuating the cooling trend in northern and central parts of India.
Minimum Temperature Expected According to Delhi Weather Forecast
Minimum temperatures are expected to dip further in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan over the next two days.” The India Meteorological Department has further warned of hailstorms with thunderstorms in isolated parts of northwest and central India. Light to moderate snowfall is also likely in the Himalayas during 27 and 28 December.
For the week ending January 1, 2025, the IMD has predicted a fresh western disturbance that could bring widespread rainfall and isolated heavy showers to the northern plains. The minimum temperatures are likely to decrease by 2-4°C over the western Himalayan region and remain below normal over northern and central India during this week.
Though an isolated cold wave over north Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh is not likely, the residents of these regions have been advised to prepare for colder and wet conditions.
