The mountainous region of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan has made it to CNN’s list of the top 25 must-visit destinations in 2025. This would mean the unmatchable and towering natural beauties that are GB would certainly be included among the must-listed buckets for adventure-seekers and nature enthusiasts.
CNN Travel has described the rugged beauty of the region, located in the majestic Karakoram Mountains. While reaching the area is a challenge due to unpredictable flight schedules and seasonal road closures, the beauty of the region lies in its untamed landscapes. “Gilgit Baltistan boasts more tantalizing peaks than a lemon meringue pie,” the publication wrote, underlining the dramatic terrain of the region.
Why Gilgit Baltistan is among the must-visit destinations?
This region has five of the world’s 14 “eight-thousander” peaks: mountains that stretch beyond 8,000 meters. These include K2, which is the second-highest summit in the planet and possibly the toughest to climb. According to CNN, hiking in Gilgit Baltistan is far more rugged compared to other known ranges, which adds that the Karakoram makes trekking in the Himalayas feel like a stroll in the park.
Yearly, thousands of adventure-seekers from other parts of the globe visit Gilgit Baltistan to enjoy mountaineering, paragliding, trekking, and cultural excursions. In the year 2024, it witnessed its highest number of expeditions ever, though its threatening attraction cost nine climbers’ lives, as the Alpine Club of Pakistan reports. These include climbers who belonged to Japan, Pakistan, Russia, and Brazil.
This recognition should increase tourism in the area further, along with opening opportunities for local communities and highlighting the need for sustainable tourism practices.
