Security forces launched a nighttime operation in Islamabad on Tuesday to disperse the protesters after they breached barricades near the city’s high-security red zone.
Clashes between demonstrators, led by key figures of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, and police led to the tear gas and reports of violence, while officials confirmed the death of at least six people, including four security personnel. Pakistan’s authorities shut off internet services in the major regions of the country to choke the mobilization of supporters of Khan. The act cut off communication, rendering many protesters incapable of organizing themselves effectively. PTI leaders accused the government of silencing dissent through digital censorship, and the blackouts of the internet made it challenging to verify the conflicting reports of violence and injuries.
Along with blocked roads and restricted transport, the internet blackout prevented journalists and activists from covering the protests in real time. Analysts now warn that such tactics undermine democratic freedoms further in the country.
His followers continue to demand his release, even denouncing what they brand as politically motivated cases against him. Thousands of supporters of Khan have been arrested across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces with a backlash by human rights activists over the crackdown.
